1st Armored Division:
Old Ironsides.
The 1st Armored Division was activated as a Regular Army
unit on July 15th, 1940, with Headquarters at Fort Knox,
Kentucky. After participation in 1941 maneuvers in both
Louisiana and the Carolinas, the Division had one change
of station to Fort Dix, New Jersey, before embarking for
the European Theater in May of 1942.
The Division received its nickname from its first commander,
Maj. General Bruce Magruder, who was impressed by the parallels
between the early development of the tank and the Navy's first
ironclad ship, the USS Constitution — fondly called "Old Ironsides."
Current location: WIESBADEN, Germany.
Campaigns:
World War II
(Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Anzio,
