2nd Armored Division:
Hell on Wheels.
The 2nd Armored Division was activated as a Regular Army
unit on July 15th, 1940, with Headquarters at Fort Benning,
Georgia. As one of the two major components of the Armored
Force, the 2nd Division participated in a series of training
exercises including Second Army maneuvers in Tennessee, summer
training with the Third Army, multi-army maneuvers in Louisiana,
First Army maneuvers in the Carolinas, and special amphibious
training in the Chesapeake Bay area. In October of 1942, Combat
Command B (CCB) embarked for overseas service in North Africa
and landed at Casablanca, French Morocco, on November 8th, 1942.
The Division nickname is attributed to a remark made in 1941
when General (a Major General at the time) George S. Patton, Jr.
commanded the Division and said of his men, "They'll be hell
on wheels when they meet the enemy."
