This dog lives in Kiana, an Eskimo village 75 miles inland from Kotzebue. Old-timers tell me that before the arrival of the snow machine in the mid-60s, this is what sled dogs in the region looked like. This particular dog was probably 12 years old and very friendly. May 20, 2006: I ran into the owner of this dog yesterday and he told me that a moose attacked him and broke his back. They had to put him down. He said he thinks the dog was originally from the McKenzie River area of Canada.
