Indian Paint Brush at Court House Rock04_06_05.jpg

Today Wanda and I had business down in Moab, Utah. We had a little extra time so we drove in to Arches National Park. Some of the wildflowers are beginning to bloom. The Indian Paint Brush is thicker and more brilliant than I have ever seen it in past years. I guess the record rain fall this year may give us a spectacular desert wildflower bloom this year. I'm looking forward to the next two months.

Now for the funny part of this photo. This little bunch of flowers was just off the side of the road about 10 feet. I needed to lay on my belly to get the photo (BTW the Gitzo 2220 Explorer tripod is great for these on the ground type of photos). As I was laying on my belly happily snapping pictures I hear the screech of brakes behind me. A mini van stopped about 10 yards down the road from me. I could see the people in the car straining to look back at me. I think they thought I was a body in the bushes along the side of the road. They stayed there parked in the middle of the road for 30 seconds or more before I sat up with my camera. At that point they drove on.

Steve,

I really didn't think about it; but, your right it is a little distracting and I think cloning it out would be pretty simple. I might have to go back and give it a try.

Bill, I am just catching up on your PAD and I hope you look back a couple of days for new comments. Anyhow, I like this image a lot but I have one issue with it. I find the out of focus dead branch/twig in the foreground a little distracting since it is so bright and prominent. I copied the image down and did a 10 second hack job with the clone tool just to see and I think it is a stronger image without the dead branch. Did you consider cloning it out or removing it when you made the image? I know different people have different reactions to the clone tool or changing the environment they find so I was curious what your thought were?

Bill,

The word is still out on blooms on my side of the country. Going for a 1 week shoot in the Smokies later this month...we shall see.

Beautiful... I'm glad you are very much alive!

Jon, this Indian Paint Brush is really that red. I normally bump saturation 3% in post processing; but, on this photo I had to lower the red saturation -5% to keep the red within the color gamut of sRGB.

Normally these plants grow taller and more spindly and are a not as thick. We had had record breaking moisture last fall and right on through this spring all over the Southwest United States. There were and are record breaking Spring flower blooms in Death Valley, the Mojave Desert and Sonora Desert. The high desert of the Colorado Plateau is one of the last to bloom so, it is just starting. I expect the next few weeks to get better and better for wildflower blooming on our nearby deserts.

Very nice composition and color. Interesting story.

Lovely photo and bokeh. Is the flower that red, is the sat. boosted, or did you use something like the Singh-Ray color enhancing filter?

Nice use of background to give the plant context.

Nice... our desert is starting to bloom too! i don't think I have ever seen Indian Paint Brush that thick either..

Excellent shot Bill. I like the out of focus cliffs in the background. Funny story about the tourists. Looks like you had a great day for pix.
