Tallahassee / Quincy, Florida

You have a choice. You really do.
You can choose to be as prepared as you can be, … or you can choose to let fate throw whatever it wants to at your head and try to deal with it as best you can. For most of my adult life I’ve carried a small survival pack in every car I’ve owned. Pretty basic stuff really, … and it all fits in one little green bag. Two canteens full of water, a black leather first aid kit, a sharp knife that can be used to skin game or use as a silent weapon, compass, small flashlight, three days of food in the form of Military MREs complete with the water activated heaters, a pistol or other small handgun, 35mm film canister with quarters, (it holds exactly seven bucks, … check it out), a survival blanket and a Leatherman brand all-purpose tool. At one time I also carried a complete change of clothes as well, but got out of the habit when I moved to Florida. Silly perhaps to most folk’s thinking to carry this gear in a car, … but living where the snow drifts hit eleven feet or more at times and at least once a month reading about some family or long haul trucker being stranded on some long lonely stretch of road with no food for days made it easy for me to decide to take such simple precautions.
Being prepared. It shouldn’t be just a guy thing.

Over the top? No, not really Simon. Remember, here in America there are still hundreds and hundreds of miles of wilderness, especially out west where I lived for a time. This particular pistol, the Glock, has absolutely astonishing accuracy, and is a fine pistol to use for small game and even deer if necessary. In many states, (including Florida where I now live), it is totally legal to carry a firearm in the car, … and if you have a concealed weapon’s permit, it can be carried on your person. There’s a saying my Dad pounded into my head, … “It’s better to be prepared for the worst and never need it, then not to be prepared and suffer the consequences.”
