My Wife's College *

Douglass College, New Brunswick, NJ (taken from Highland Park, NJ)

At the top, in the background, is Voorhees Chapel named after Elizabeth Rodman Voorhees, philanthropist; married Ralph Voorhees in 1887, after a seventeen year engagement(!). Mrs. Voorhees bequeathed her residuary estate amounting to $1,600,000 to the NJ college for Women (Douglass College) for the construction and maintenance of a building for religious purposes. Voorhees Chapel was the result.

In the middle, on the banks of the Raritan River, is the Boat House. The Rutgers Boating Association , which was founded in 1867, was first housed in a converted canal boat chained to a bridge. A more permanent home was built on the Raritan River in 1870, but a storm 12 years later washed the boathouse away. Around 1933, a barge was purchased from the Central Railroad of New Jersey and used to house rowing equipment. It too was lost after a raging torrent flooded the Raritan. The current building near the old Delaware and Raritan Canal lock was built in 1950 and is a gift of the Class of 1914. An addition was added in 1961 and today is it houses 20 boats, each fitting eight Rutgers crew members.

In the foreground, at the bottom, is the melting snowman, built around February 25, 2005, by a couple of industrious kids. There is little hope, alas, that the structure will survive much longer, as the forecast calls for heavy rain.
