Watermelon Seller, Ananda Temple, Bagan, Myanmar, 2005

Her face smeared liberally with cooling Thanaka paste, this watermelon vendor rests for a moment in the shade of one of Bagan's ancient ruined temples. She normally carries her tray of watermelon on her head. The watermelon is in her lap, but the small head pillow she uses to support the watermelon, remains ready for use at a moment’s notice. The convergence of colors in this image amazed me. Not only does she paint her face yellow, but the walls behind her seem to be painted with splotches of the same color. The top of the curving, sun-baked wall is the exact color of her head pillow. The colors of the wall blend with her so well, it seems as if she has become part of it.

A series of repeating rhythms pull the eye through this picture. The curves and points of the watermelon slices repeat the shape of the wall cutouts she leans on. Just as the watermelon slices are arrayed on her tray, point by point, so, too, the top of the wall behind her is designed as a series of repeating pointed shapes.

At ease, she looks at the camera, glad to find a spot of shade in the brutal mid-day heat. Soon she will place the watermelon back on her head and resume her rounds on the streets and plazas surrounding the ruins of Bagan’s most famous temple.

Thanks, Bernard, for following my link from Mo's Banana Lady to this image. You express the very thoughts that I had while making it. Thanks, too, for noting the metaphorical weathering of both woman and stone -- that, too, is very much a part of this photograph.

I came to this image via Monique's banana lady and I'm glad I made the jump. Its a superb shot and your description is so apt. Wonder if she had some customers or was tempted to lessen her own thirst by swallowing some of her pieces of watermelon and forgo part of her earnings. You can feel the heat and experience the endurance in her facial expression.
It's if she is also weathered by time, as the stone works behind her. Wonderful capture Phil.

Once again, you are projecting your own feelings and values into this image, Theodore. Which is what I had hoped for when I made it. I want each viewer to look at her and come to their own conclusions. Dandan sees her daily life, Don sees the color red, Jen sees a goddess of kindness, while you see the irony in finding happiness through simplicity. I am always delighted when one of my images can inspire so many different feelings and thoughts in my viewers.

I feel so sorry for her. These people lead such a simple life and yet the irony is that they are probably happier this way.

The God of Kindness...what a compassionate thought. I find the presence of the lotus in this image to be fascinating, Jen. I saw the curves of the watermelon slices repeating the curves on the wall, curves that seem to embrace the woman. By noting that those curves appear as lotus petals to you, symbolic of a deity, you illuminate this image in an entirely different way. Thanks, Jen, as well, for sensing that she has been there all this time and will be there forever. That is how I felt as I made this image.

I was going through your workplace gallery, and this image immediately caught my eyes.. It maybe a moment rest for her, but for me, she seems have been there all this time and will be there forever. In the picture, she is a part of her culture, religion and history.. It is timeless.... The shape of the wall and the watermelon remind me of lotus flower, which in chinese culture always goes with God... And the woman in the picture seems like the God of kindness..

Thanks for your comment, Dandan. I tried to put as much of her, the person, into this image as I could. That is why I included so much environment. I was struck by the way she painted herself very much as her surroundings look. This is her moment of rest. For her, the workplace is her life.

To me this is a beautiful portrait! Just look at this image, you almost can see her daily life, and the environment she lives in.
