I went to Central Park for the debute of "The Gates", a Christo and Jeanne-Claude sculture work involving 7,500 safron-colored arches spread over 23 miles of trail. It was quite an impressive sight. Apparently, this work was 25 years in the making but will stand for only 16 days.
The individual gates are designed to come together with the park environment to become the work of art. As the artists say, they are trying to reverse the relationship in art between artwork and relic. The materials will be recycled after the exibit because each individual arch would only be a relic of the original artwork (which is designed to be transient). So, this photo is intended to reflect that theme with the arches being a small component of this scene with the cityscape and natural lake.
I guess what I take away from this is the importance of not focusing on those possessions that we can "collect" but rather what we can create in a moments time by our interactions with our community and environment. Those things are much more long-lasting in our heart than what we can put in a case or shelf.
