Mississippi at flood stage

Montz, Louisiana

The River level is extremely high for the past few weeks because of all the rain and melting snow that has been funneled into it from its tributaries in the northern part of the U. S. Louisiana is the last state it flows through before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. These ocean going vessels seem dwarfed by the River.
This was shot adjacent to the Bonnet Carre' Spillway. I have a gallery of the Spillway with a brief history at http://www.pbase.com/septembermorn/bonnet_carre_spillway.
The River is due to crest on February 4 some 10 miles upriver from the Spillway at 22.2 feet. Flood stage is 22 feet, so you can imagine how very high it is.

other sizes: small medium original auto

Wow - I remember the floods. Kind of scary?

It is a huge river!

I would love to visit the swamps and bayous of Louisiana someday. Up here in Northern Indiana we had some swamps and boggs, but not many are left. Of course we don't have any gators, but we do have a few snakes to worry about.

Your angle of view is superb; it gives the photo a very surreal feel and look...

It always amazes me the size of boats they're able to sail along the river - huge!

Neat shot and that is a lot of water. Maybe you can get a shot of the spillway when the river crests.

Nice shot. That is one thing I miss about living in Detroit....the freighters

We have never seen creatures in our yards, no. In front of my house in Montz there is a seconday levee (the old levee from 1929-1973)and a lot of the creatures live on it when the water is high. The ships are extra careful. It is slow-going upriver against the current but smooth going downriver. You can see how wide it is here.

Whoa! Do all kinds of creatures seek higher ground with the land being flooded? Do the boats have navigational problems?? Yikes.
