This is a shot of the 'pond' at the top of Ashop Moor, lying alongside the infamous Snake Pass - One of the most dangerous roads in England, along with the Cat and Fiddle Pass a little further south. In summer, they can be great fun, full of twists and turns and dips and rises. In winter, these roads must be treated with great respect and are closed when the weather gets too bad. This pond is at the crest of a hill and I have rarely passed it in good weather, it is frequently foggy on this part even when the rest of the road is clear. The weather was clear this time, but the moor was very icy and had a smattering of snow.
I pulled off the road to take the shot, hoping I would be able to get back on again OK as the layby is slightly lower than the road and has a 2 inch hump to climb back over. It was also sheet ice! Fortunately I managed to get enough grip to get back out again, I reeaaally didn't want to spend too long up there.
I'm still playing catch up from my trip to the Peak District so I will be uploading another shot later tonight. If you want to see this National Park in more favourable conditions, and a prettier location, click on 'Previous' to see the shot I uploaded yesterday.
