Guy in Vienna, 1956. By JKirbs

Christmas Day, 2002, and we dived into my Uncles archives. It's later than '56 that shot, but we loaded magazine after magazine covering 60 years of his work, so i can't be sure of dates. After several hours of shooting still lifes with the Rollei projector and gels as our only source, Guy slid this projection in, and stood staring at the scene. Long enough i could use my spot F, and work out where to place focus. I wanted the old Kodachrome on the wall to be sharp, reflecting on how to my mind at least, values have become unclear in the years since. On reflection I wish I'd stopped down and caught the light play on my friend's face. But it was already half - posed, and i broadly dislike posed shots. Captured on Provia 400F, the projection was a early E14 shot on a Retina II.

Well, let me finish, Dmitri... Let me finish, Dmitri... Well listen, how do you think I feel about it?... Can you *imagine* how I feel about it, Dmitri?... Why do you think I'm calling you? Just to say hello?... *Of course* I like to speak to you!... *Of course* I like to say hello!...

Michael, would it confirm your vital acuity to add that my Uncle worked for the MOD? His card used to read "Whitehall 8224, War Office, Director Munitions Supply". He's the reason for my love of photography. He was prolific, but in over a hundred thousand plates and slides, there wasn't one showing him, or even his friends or wife. The rare photo we have of him during his working life is Crown Copyright, possibly making it illegal for us to posess. A quiet, deeply thoughtful man, whose only ever mild grumbling in life was that unlike his more public colleagues at the AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) he wasn't awarded a Kighthood. I remember him best though as a great cook and gardener. (Yes, he would wear a suit to tend his greenhouses.) It's strange how such a self restrained life exudes its passions. H.T.Kirby, 1900 - 1984. Fond memories.

A sentimental journey. Although I'm unfamiliar with the photographer who has been photographed, your explanation supplies the meaning and sense of poignant reminiscence. Wonderful candid snapshot. --Kim

I like this; it's got a real quirky, nostalgic feel. It's the photographic equivalent of playing your old 45's on the Danset.
