Finally, after a long climb from Raquira, we reach Chiquinquira. The main attraction of this city is the church called "Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Rosario en Chiquinquira". It is a very beautiful building famous because in it resides a painting of the Virgin Mary which restored miraculosly by itself. The story more or less speaks of the miraculous restoration of a painting from 1560 which after years of neglect under humidity and dust had torn and faded completely. A lady of the time found what was left of the painting and hung it on her house. She prayed to it every day, and one day, while she prayed in the company of a native and her son, the painting started shining and restored in front of their eyes. This was accepted by the Pope as a miracle and from there on, this Basilica is a sanctuary where many people flock to in search of favors to the Virgin Mary.
