I've already decided this one will be coming down - as soon as I can get a replacement for it. Thanks Shu! :) ~ Lonnit

Lonnet--It's an excellent image, but not for this challenge. I like your others so much better and I think you will be getting my vote. Shu

Victor, yes, and that would have been a good idea. :) As for the physics of it, I don't know why it should spin any less one way or the other, but it seems to be the case. The best way I can figure, is that when it's wound under it breaks against the underside of the roll, whereas on top, it isn't breaking against anything so must pick up much more speed.

Grant, that was very well put and makes a lot of sense. Thank you. :)

Lonnit,
Somehow, I'm not surprised by your answer, although I'm trying to figure out how the spin would be more in one direction than the other.

It just donned on me that you could use the same subject for the same letter by just changing the perspective so that the camera is looking through the hole of the tube (while it's still mounted). -- Victor

you asked for it...although it is generally in the shape of a c, the contrast between the toilet paper and the roll make them seem as if they are two (visually) separate things. do the squint test. the c disappears and all you see is the paper. also, the subject matter doesn't really suck me in. i think the interesting thing about these types of photos is the sense of discovery when the viewer sees something for the first time in an object they may have looked at hundreds of times. or when there is some sort of visual pun. there should be something for the viewer to discover. that is why i think crops of everyday objects are more interesting than everyday objects. ed's rings make some sense because he has been married 8 years. my daughter's belly button makes sense because it is her initial. i like your JOY image because it can be interpreted as finding pleasure in everyday things. does this make any sense?

Ok, good... so now I know people aren't silently loving it and no hearts will be broken if I rip it out of here to put up something else. :) As for the paper, we like to hang it so the loose piece comes out the back instead of the front. The theory is that we find that when you yank a piece off, if it's front loaded, the roll will spin and you get all that overspill after the rip. If you hang to the back, when you yank it off the roll does not do the extra free-spinning. :) ~ Lonnit

Lonnit,

Since you asked, to me C's are essentially round letters. What we have here is a square shape (I know everything making it up is round, but that's beside the point). In other words, while it looks vaguely like a C, I don't think it's close enough. That being said, it's better than most of the other entries here. By the way, I think it's interesting that the roll is sideways compared to the norm. So do you mount the roll so that it rotates counterclockwise when you pull a sheet, since you live in the northern hemisphere? Would this be a bone of contention if you had some Australian visitors? -- Victor

Hi Lonnit. Love the tone. I like the top corner being a little darkened at the tip, makes the "C" shape work better. But if I was nitpicking I would've wanted the bottom leg's corner to be also uniformly lit as the top one. You asked for it ;-)
