Sfax Medina

The Loner, Bab Diwan

A woman sits on the ground at Bab Diwan, with a bottle of water and a few of her belongings in a plastic bag. There's a worried look in her eyes, bordering on desperation. Where she sits - one of the fort entrances into the medina - is a busy place. Yet no one walks near her or acknowledges her. She does not approach anyone. She keeps her distance, and so does everyone else. She's alone in her own world, with her own worries and her troubles.

I agree with everything you say in the caption here, Celia. But meaning depends on the ease of reading the detail in her face. The relatively modest scale of the woman's face and hands, placed within a six inch wide image, makes those details less likely to have the impact and meaning you want them to have. It remains a wonderfully expressive image, a portrait of a person who must survive on her own. It is only a technical presentation decision that keeps us from fully appreciating her plight.
