This image is organized brilliantly, Celia. You use your vantage point to create perspective control, drawing the viewer into the image via a wall that enters at lower right, and leads as a pointer directly in to the protagonists. The light take over, spotlighting the man with his back to us and the two men he may well envy. His posture tells us that he sits alone in a society known for its camaraderie. We identify with him as he looks down on those two distant figures who talk together. They never even look up at the outcast. The warmth of the light mocks the despair he must feel. In black and white, this would be simply grim. Color offers an incongruity -- we see great loneliness in such a golden light.
