The Mahdia Market

The indoor markets in Tunisia are surprisingly housed in buildings with elaborate interiors. This one in Mahdia may be plain in colour, but has the most elaborate series of arches as its ceiling. These gave the market a softer, more organic feel and perhaps fit in quite well with the natural produce. I've composed these organic curves against the fresh vegetables that were sold here, to make it appear like it was sprouting from them.

Such a rich, earthy and unusual combination these lovely arches and piles of carrots and fennel make. I can't help thinking that when we eat vegetation, we're in essence consuming "light." These graceful white curves above the produce seem as an illustration of this fact. I also like that the picture is tilted a little, lending it a lot of motion.

A marvelous market shot, exquisitely organized on the diagonal, with contrasting color and textures.
