The Dark Passage

The Dark Passage, also known as Skifa el Kahla, was once an only entrance to the city of Mahdia about a thousand years ago. Its long dark entrance was notriously frightening, especially to all new visitors and invaders who could be trapped inside its darkness by iron grills. I waited until I saw people emerging from The Dark Passage before I made the picture. Although it was blazingly bright outside, I am sure the women were glad to be coming out of its darkness.

Scale incongruity is the key here. Only the image itself is so small that the scale incongruity never gets a chance to work properly on the reader. The size difference between man and wall must be stressed if it is to be effective. And it would be if this image filled our screens.
