The El Jem amphitheatre may be the world's most impressive amphitheatre, but it coexists with an extremely unattractive town that has grown around it. This ruin may well be a tourist's treasured experience, but is probably taken for granted by the towns people who live next to it and see it day after day. This extraordinary piece of roman architecture and history is probably no more important than their daily drink at the cafes.
