Hand of Fatima

This bloody looking red palm print may be eerie in the context of western culture, but Tunisians regard it as a good luck charm that can ward off the "evil eye". The Fatima referred to is the Prophet's daughter, but it is unclear what the connection is or what the hand symbolizes. One theory is that the five fingers represent the Five Pillars of Islam. The Hand of Fatima is often placed near the entrance of the home. I noticed this striking symbol on a doorway while wondering around Douiret.
