"Ghorfa" means room, which is also used to refer to the little cells or rooms built for storing grain. These cells are often built side by side and on top of each other. Ksour are ghorfas that have been fortified. Beni Kheddache used to be a mountain ksar but it was completely demolished by the French before WWII to make way for a market. Some interesting ghorfas that are still in use can be seen in town. Where simple palm trunks were once used for doors, more modern and even brightly painted doors are now preferred. Fancy french-influenced metal-work have also begun to emerge.
