The Sea Gull

La Jolla, CA

Looking North Northwest toward Torrey Pines and Del Mar. I think this is one of the most beautiful coastlines in North America.

Believe it or not this was done with my Canon f/1.8 50mm lens. I’m not totally happy because the seagull is just a tad out of focus.

Incredible. Hard enough to catch one or the other in action but you got them both!
Guest 17-Aug-2004 22:32
Looks good to me - you've got it all, including a wave breaking over the rocks! The gull isn't *that* out of focus; I like the photo!

Oh man, WOW. Love the sharpness in the shot all the way down to the little people. You couldn't have orchestrated this better if you'd tried. WOW!!

Fantastic!

Well done, Robin. Where do you train your SoCal seagulls to pose?
Jude Marion09-Aug-2004 13:40
This is GORGEOUS! Everything seems to have happened PERFECTLY for you with this one! Great capture! This coastline does look pretty spectacular!
Guest 08-Aug-2004 16:16
How did I miss this one?? Fabulous! That 50mm is a great value, isn't it?

Great shot, Robin!!

Berry, berry good, Robin! As was said below, one of your best.

Amazing shot!! The scene is just perfect. The gull is a bit soft, but I think it works fine here -- gives it a sense of motion. Beautifully done.

They ARE fun, aren't they?? Pretty remarkable, the depth to this one.

(My preference, slow and stupid are about my speed, when it comes to birds)

One of your best, Robin. Good timing with the breaking wave, too.

beautiful . . you caught THAT one perfectly =]
jude07-Aug-2004 22:27
the gull is out of focus? hmmmm.. (note to self - op.. opt.. opthal.. eye doctor)
It's, indeed a beautiful photo. I like the color one.. but the black and white beats all to hell. BEAUTIFUL and yes.. i see that one on my wall.
baja_traveler07-Aug-2004 21:05
Have to agree - perfect timing of the wave action and the seagull position. I wouldnt have taken much notice of the focus if you didnt point it out.
Guest 07-Aug-2004 20:13
Wonderful capture...superb timing!
David Winge07-Aug-2004 18:32
Beautiful capture! Timing is everything.

You are definitely being much too hard on yourself! This is terrific.
Herb 07-Aug-2004 18:16
Great job, Robin
katwilkens07-Aug-2004 18:03
Beautiful. Who cares if the seagull is a tad out of focus? I don't!
Guest 07-Aug-2004 18:02
Robin...from the thumb I thought this was a Photoshop job! the waves, the gull... I think this is a great capture.... Who cares that the gull is a bit soft! Looks very nice to me.... I like both versions for different reasons....! This would make a nice postcard, while I would hang the B/W on the wall!
snootydog07-Aug-2004 17:52
Okay Robin, you are being a tad hard on yourself. Maybe it isn't a PERFECT photo, but it is a darn good one. My favorite part of it is that the people in the distance look so dwarfed by the foreground gull. It really is a wonderful photo.
Guest 07-Aug-2004 17:36
Great capture!
Melanie07-Aug-2004 17:32
I believe you in that comment about t his probably being the most beautiful coast in N America! Awesome view.
I like this coloured version better as well. It seems to make the picture more alive.
Cindy07-Aug-2004 17:27
I prefer the color version, somehow the water and sky seem to compliment the crashing waves more as it does the seagull also. Very nice shot, the bit of blur to the seagull is barely noticeable. Nice timing to get this shot.
Pall Gudjonsson07-Aug-2004 17:25
Great timing Robin - and remarkable results with that little piece of plastic :-)
Having looked at both versions, I favour the b&w - feel it gives more feeling of the action !
Lou Giroud07-Aug-2004 17:20
I have seen both pictures, in some way I prefer the B&W, it may depend of the context in which the picture is used and seen. I like that dramatic touch in the B&W and the cripyness of the shot in that version..
Lou Giroud07-Aug-2004 17:16
Very often those seagulls are not where you want them to be, but this time, Robin, she obviously was, or where you on the right spot at that moment. Anyway it made a fantastic shot.
