Samurai armor*
by Arn

Mempo: A half mask covering the face below the eyes including the nose, intended to enhance it's wearers fierceness and demoralize the enemy, as well as protect. The face armor often consists of a guard on the nose, cheeks, jaw, and chin, but the sômen which protects the whole face is rarely worn. A simulated bristling moustache made from animal fur or horsehair was frequently attached to the mempo. A plated and laced throat protector or yodare kake was attached to the bottom of the mempo

Kabuto (the helmet) were initially developed to protect against attack, but the unique history of Japan gave the artists (armorers) the opportunity to clearly show their technical and artistic skills. For the bearer it was not only to protect his head, but also to identify him, to advertise his prowess on the battlefield, to show his social status and even his religious fervor.

An imposing photo with a suitable heavy feel to it. I like how this has been lit and I find myself drawn back to view the photo over and again. - Simon Bennett

So if I'd seen "The Last Samurai" I would have known this wasn't a shadow? Dang! Arn, thank you for the explanation. I think I am even more fascinated with this guy now. ;-) --Nancy

I also loved the movie, "The Last Samurai"...I can see how the background and facial shadowing add to the mood and the mystery surrounding this type of warrior. I like the mix of textures here too. MFC

A compelling capture of samurai armor, Arn. I think one of the best scenes I've seen depicting how these kabuto frightened opponents was in the movie, "The Last Samurai," in a forest scene when all these samurai suddenly appear in the mist wearing their helmets. I surely would have been frightened! Helen

Heh, this image took relatively little post processing... Just a little cropping, desaturating, brightening (curve) and a little cleaning for the backround. The thing about this guy's eyes is, that he hasn't got any! So it is neccessary that they are hidden in the shadow - the facial armor stopped just below the eyes, or more specifically, where the eyes would be :) I added some info to the image about the face armor. -Arn

I'm totally fascinated by this guy-- I've looked at him several times today, just to see the textures and shapes of the metal. I really like what you did in your post processing. It feels like your processing added some depth and patina to the piece. [*] My one quibble is the deep shadow where his eyes should be. I am thinking that you didn't have much control over the lighting (is this a museum piece?), so it must have been difficult to prevent the shadow. Is there any way you could process one layer just for the eyes, then blend that in with the rest of the piece? As a sidenote, I love the fiber representing the beard and mustache-- it's so whimsical! I wonder how this bit of tradition got started? --Nancy
