Bear cub

view map

For Acclimatization we hiked Mt Gaylor near Tioga Pass. About half way up this bear cub started following us. We didn't want to get too close fearing the wrath of momma bear, but in this picture the cub has walked to within about 10 - 15 feet of Bud. We backed off and kept a healthy distance. Later talking to the ranger about it, we found out that a car had probably hit this poor cub's mom. Although there was nothing we could have done to help it, Bud kept/keeps thinking about this poor little cub (probably about five or six months old weighing not more than 100 lbs) whose chances of making it to, much less through, the winter are slim to nil. Poor little guy... sure wish we could have done something!

I know! As I was going back through Yosemite a week later I was thinking of going up there, but it was dark and raining, so...
Where we saw him it was National Forest land (a couple hundred yards from the National Park boundary). The Forest Service has a policy of non-intervention (let nature take it's course), the Park Service will intercede in certain cases (and always with "problem bears"). I should have counseled the cub to go and knock over a couple of trash cans and campsites.

Go back and get him! I'll take care of him.
