Phipps Conservatory

At lunch today I went over to Phipps to see what I could find. The last time I was there, the butterfly forest exhibit had just opened. That was a while ago and now the place is FULL of butterflies!!! What fun! I just wish people would STOP letting their children touch them! Grrrrrr….

Always educational...and passionate. good Points...except you are assuming the parents are aware of all of those facts. Well, Now they are anyways.

The wings of a butterfly are extremely delicate. They are covered with very fine, colored scales that if touched, come off. When these scales come off the butterfly can no longer fly and is crippled. A crippled butterfly dies. The conservatory has this show so that all people may come and enjoy seeing these creatures flying around and feeding on flowers up close. When I see children being allowed to handle them in indelicate ways it tends to make me upset. As far as I am concerned it’s just bad manners and shows a lack of respect for living beings. They’re not there to be used as play toys. A lack of respect for nature in this setting is usually amplified in a natural one. I mean, if it’s OK to maim a butterfly here; why would it not be OK in a wild field where the butterfly in question may be rare or almost extinct? What I see is not the fault of the children but one of a parent who is not teaching the children how to treat living creatures with respect.

Why should people stop their children from touching butterflies?? It's not like the butterflies are in some kind of endangered state in the controlled environment of a butterfly forest exhibit and if kids get the notion that these creatures are worth protecting in the wild (habitat restoration, etc.) then maybe their generation will do more about it from a sense of personal interaction with them.
