Typically English??

Typically English?? I think so. There's a wealth of information to be found if you Google "post box history" so I won't bore the pants off you by citing rhyme and verse here. This example of a typical village post box was found in the village of Manthorpe. Do you have anything similar close to where you live??

Did you know that the post boxes in Scotland don't have EIIR on them? They just say ER. This is because Scotland has only ever had one Queen Elizabeth! Just thought I'd share that fascinating piece of trivia!

PS - just saw Linda's comments... no I didn't delete it, just realised on the way to shoot the post box that I still had the egg-bum shots from the day before on my CF card, and the post box is right outside a school... that could have ended in Nanny-State show trial...

Something similar? Yes, 100 yards down the road... I'm sure you drove past it...!

We have one nearly outside our house.

My nearest post box is red, has ER on it, but is otherwise awful, and I think it was probably of a 70s or 80s design. Its square and orrible!
They still have many "English" post boxes in the Republic of Ireland, but painted green!
And I once saw a very British pillar box painted in the local colours in a square in Lisbon...

Apart from the same color, no
Lovely shot

Typically English , absolutely ! Just like the lovely red telephone boxes they ripped out and replaced with plastic monstrosities . Why did they do that ?????

In Portugal, we had some red ones but round
Nostalgic times of letters, envelopes sealed with a kiss, stamps and normal mail:-)

When I was a kid these types of post boxes reminded me of red lolly pops! Nice shot, Ian! Oh, and the one up the road from us is a standard red pillar box - with graffiti on it!!

Nope.... nothing like it. But it is very English. Fun to see your world.
Guest 28-Jun-2004 18:48
Nope, nothing like this near me! So, YES, it fits the Typically English" category! I think this could be a cool theme! Keep it up, to you these things may not be exciting, but remember lots of us "Yankees" like to see things like this!! Example: The Golden Gate Bridge bores the crap out of me, but if I post people always love it!! LOL!!

Funnily enough there is one in our street! DM photographed it recently then got paranoid because he was using his camera outside a school and so scuttled off and deleted it!!!
