Marble House was built from 1888 - 1892 by William Vanderbilt as a present to his wife Alva. Being educated in France she was fascinated by french culture and architecture, so Marble House was inspired by the Petit Trianon in Versailles/France. The interior shows influence of the heavely decorative style of french palaces of the baroque age.
