Rainbow Lory

Jurong Birdpark, Singapore

Scientific name: Trichoglossus haematodus (Linnaeus, 1771). CITES status: CITES II - ENDANGERED.

The term "Rainbow Lory" is a generic one applied to over 20 separate brightly colored birds. The Rainbow group, Trichoglossus haematodus,
is comprised of one nominate species (T.h. haematodus) shown here, commonly called the green naped lory, and approximately twenty-two subspecies.

These widely distributed birds are native to Australia and many of the Islands of Indonesia and the South Pacific. A live Rainbow Lorikeet
was taken back to Europe by Sir Joseph Banks. This was the first Australian parrot known to have been kept in captivity. In his 1896 book,
St. George Mivart describes it as "a quarrelsome and noisy bird".
