*LikeAbikin'

Frederiksberg Have, Copenhagen

When I was in Berlin about a year ago, I saw kids on these "LikeAbikes" all over the place.
Thought they were really great and bought one for my son, even though he was still too
young for it. It is like a bike (hence the name), but it doesn't have any pedals on it. It's like
a scooter but it only has two wheels. After two times out, he had already gotten the idea
of lifting his two feet off the ground and balancing, like on a bike. At that point (Sep 2003),
he wasn't even two yet... Nowadays, he wants to go fast and all hills have to be explored!

Thanks everyone for your input - and sorry guys, for not being more determined! I've changed it back to a reworked version of the originally posted shot. His face is unsharp, but that is only because it is shaking from the bumpy ride, just take a look at that back wheel and compare it to the one in the front! I think it is fair to say, I panned at the right speed, I just couldn't follow the vibrations! And for the record, here is the shot I had up for a while, showing more of the face:

Olaf,
I like the original too. That's a great bike and a cute little guy too. Lots of movement here. Roberta

I prefer the original. For one thing, the angle indicating downhill is more pronounced. This really adds to the feeling of movement. The eyes of the boy also convey more speed to me in the orignal. I think it's because the one showing both eyes makes it look too much like the boy is coming toward the observer. The color seems to be a little warmer in the original as well. -- Victor

I think I prefer the original photo. Looked back and forth several times.

Because the child is moving downhill (or because it emphasizes downward movement), it really adds to the picture. I can almost feel his joy going downhill and want to yell out "be careful" son! The original photo almost makes it interactive with the viewer.

Thanks for the comments Teapot and Billy!

I have changed the image to the one taken immediately before the one originally posted (0.4s earlier). This was the one I liked the best at first sight - as it shows more of the face. When StoneMonkey chose this one over the other one as well - for the same reason - I decided to go back to my original favorite (showing more of the face).

Teapot, I would have liked it to be sharper as well, but was pretty happy to get it this sharp handheld and panned at 94mm and 1/15s. I would imagine a monopod would be a great thing to have for this kind of shot. Unfortunately, all I have is a flimsy (=useless for SLRs) tripod with a small ball-head. I think this image is a tad sharper on the face, while the other one was sharper on the likeAbike - face is more important!

Here is the originally posted shot - for comparison and for the record:

I think this is a great story, Its hard to be critical with this one!
well shot Olaf!

I like it Olaf. Great blurred background but I think your son needs to be just a little sharper. Hard to get right apart from by trail and error I know.
