April 7, 2004

Last year, my grandmother trucked over to my house several nopales. I planted the cactus in my side yard and within weeks the plant had several buds blooming. The one who was thrilled was Adin - how he loves nopales! We will clean the pads of the needles, chop it into slivers, and then fry the bits in oil with garlic and lemon. He'll eat the young pads after cleaning without even cooking them.

Nopales are very commonly used in Mexican cooking - and there is nothing that makes my grandmother smile more, nothing that made my mother happier, than to see Adin eat the nopales with the joy he showed.

So, today, Adin and I were out in the side yard, counting the buds...waiting, waiting...

I've been getting flower photos from these for the last two weeks but I haven't liked any of the pictures I took of the rest of the plant. Great job.

Interesting shot, Carolyn. I've never had prickly pear cactus before though I have heard of it... I'd love to try it.

Lovely flower. That thging is considered noxious weed over here. Nothing eats it.

An intriguing image. Not your usual 'floral' shot...

Very nice.

I really like this Carolyn. The coloring in the parent hints of a soft fuzzy texture, but you just know that isn't right... well done.

Actually, Adalberto, yes! In fact, my grandmother refers to the base plant as the "parents" and the sprouts as the "babies."

A suggestion of pregnancy ;-)
