Rainbow Lory

Jurong Birdpark, Singapore

Latin name: Trichoglossus haematodus haematodus (Linnaeus, 1771). CITES status: CITES II - ENDANGERED.

The term "Rainbow Lory" is a generic one applied to over 20 separate brightly colored birds. The Rainbow group, Trichoglossus haematodus,
is comprised of one nominate species (T.h. haematodus) shown here, commonly called the green-naped lory, and approximately twenty-two subspecies.

These widely distributed birds are native to Australia and many of the Islands of Indonesia and the South Pacific. In his 1896 book,
St. George Mivart describes it as "a quarrelsome and noisy bird".

Hello Sheila:

Some of the lories that you mention come from Indonesia. Identifying them all is driving me nuts! I will post more later.

Hi Robert

Its odd that the rainbow lorikeets outside of Australia (including those in American zoos) have the dark rings on their breast feathers which do not exist in the local Australian birds - a large flock of which lands every day in our garden in Sydney looking for a feed!

Cheers
Sheila
