Anna, this is an awesome shot.

Anna, apparently sRGB is the standard color space for all those PC-machines out there, so when posting photos on the web, you should always convert to sRGB (in Photoshop: Image>Mode>Convert to profile) first (unless of course, it is already in sRGB)!

Regarding these photos looking different to everyone: You bet - and I have pointed to this, several times before, as being the main weakness of these internet-based photo-challenges. The best you can do, is to make sure your main monitor is well calibrated, preferably using a measuring device - and of course that your color-settings are set properly in both the system and in Photoshop.

Concerning the difference you notice between sRGB and AdobeRGB on one and the same machine: Well there could be a difference as sRGB doesn't encompass as many colors (smaller color space), but the differences should be slight. If not, you are probably doing something wrong, which I don't think, as this image looked pretty much the same to me in both sRGB and AdobeRGB (assuming color-profile-aware applications, like Photoshop and Safari). --Olaf

Sorry, forgot, the first version was adobe RGB, this one is sRBG. In my eyes I think the sRBG is more contrasty and saturated, even in Safari. Maybe it's an improvement for those not using Safari.
Anna Yu31-Mar-2004 02:57
Olaf, I use Safari too, and can say that the image looks different in my 3 monitors, any EizoT65, a crummy FujitsuSiemens and the lcd on my G4 12". (One thing good is that at least on each monitor the image looks the same in Safari as in Photoshop.) So I can imagine that all these photos must look somewhat different for everyone.

sRGB doesn't seem to make any noticeable difference on my Mac - was nice before - looks the same to me now. Probably because my browser (Safari), unlike most, utilizes whatever color-profile is embedded, to display the image as correctly as possible. Was it AdobeRGB before? --Olaf

You're very welcome, Anna. I'm always glad to help out any appreciative person. The red looks much better now and the shadows look nice and rich. Great job.

(Hehehe, at least on my monitor.)

I know, Olaf, just joking. Seriously though I reloaded an sRBG version instead, many thanks to Todd Moon for the suggestion. However I can't get the file size down! It's jpg6 compressed already. Don't know why this one takes up so much space, is it the red color? :-(
Well never mind, I just made the image smaller instead. Now it should be OK.

Anna, I am not - and will not be - annoyed (not that I really think you thought so). I just let you know something about my personal taste/preferences. As I did say, I do see the greatness in this shot too! If you don't know this flower is supposed to be red, it could just as well be violet, but why change it? I think Mark's suggestion was due to the fact that you said that red was difficult and next time you'd use a blue one... --Olaf

Mark, I'm not very good with photoshop and Olaf would get even more annoyed if I manipulated this image more. I tried to reproduce the natural colors as much as possible. Basically I think that photos should natural, whatever that means :-)
Canon DSLR Challenge29-Mar-2004 17:11
Nice interesting perspective, Anna. From your comments, you stated you were having trouble with red. Did you ever think to do a "color shift" on the image? That is... change the hue of the image to a different color? Experiement with this suggestion and, tell me if it works for you? Markjay

Usually I don't go for flower macros (I think I'm rare on that, everyone else seems to love them) but this one is really striking. I love the strong red, and the light sparkles are great. Phil

Hi guys, thanks to all for leaving a comment. I had a lot of trouble with the red color and thought the image looked very dull and unsaturated. Todd I tried your suggestion of switching from Adobe RGB to sRGB with a great improvement on saturation, but when I moved the image to another monitor it looked terrible. My solution was to calibrate the first monitor. Red is difficult. Next time I'll use a blue flower :-)
Olaf, I really appreciate your comments and I know what you mean on this one. However, I can't come up with anything better for this challenge theme (=difficult).

Anna, from my comments and votes on your images in the past, it should be obvious that I like your photography. While I can see the greatness in this shot, I also have to confess that I am against the popular opinion on this one. To me, this is too much - too effect-seeking - even if it may be a perfectly natural, non-staged scene! Just my taste I guess... --Olaf

A deep and dynamic image, great job!
Georgia Roessler28-Mar-2004 17:44
Dynamite image! The different textures are wonderful. I love the shimmering droplets and how they tend to repeat the pattern of the center of the flower. This is a real winner!
