The Great Escape.jpg

You've got to wonder how he got himself up there! First I thought the fence was distracting, but if the fence is there, again, how did he get himself up there? It's all wilderness on his side of the fence. On the side I was standing on is the children's playground. Hmm guess when you're desperate to get away.......

Utterly surreal, Lara. And the fence adds a grim dimension as well. What makes this picture work so well is its incongruity. A child's toy bike up a tree is certainly unusual. The bold colors contrast vividly to the grayness of the scene. The fence bars us from going there and playing with it. As does its location up in that tree.. A remarkable image.

The only improvement I can suggest is more effective composition. When you put the subject in the center of frame like that, you make it static instead of dynamic. If you had used a horizontal frame, and placed the subject off to the right hand side, it would have acquired a sense of tension. Here's a tip: instead of framing vertical subjects in vertical frames, try using horizontal frames as well. You have plenty of "film" in your digital camera -- and its all free. So always shoot a variety of framing approaches, vary the position of the subject in the frame, and shift your vantage point to include both more and less. The choose the image that says the most.
