Grantham

The Beehive pub in Castlegate is famed for its 'Living Sign', a beehive hanging in a tree. We did actually see a few bees flying in and out of the hive today. The wooden painted sign with its inscription used to hang between the tree and the building but is now safely housed and displayed in Grantham Museum along with the Blue Cow. What we have now is nothing more than a sheet of ply with a bit of moulding... looks like it needs a lick of paint too!

The sign reads:

Stop Traveller, this wondrous Sign explore

And say when thou hast view'd it oe'r and oe'r

Now Grantham now, two rarities are thine

A lofty Steeple and living Sign.

The lofty steeple can be seen in the next photograph.

LOL!! Not so much as a whif of the barmaid's apron I'm afraid Linda however, we've had many a swift pint or three in there (pre kids) while waiting for our pizza to cook from Mona Lisas (next door but one)... aah those were the days!

I love this sort of quirkyness - excellent - hope you managed to imbibe a few?
