Black-palmed rock monitor, Varanus glebopalma

Ubirr, Kakadu, Northern Territory, Australia

These rock inhabiting goannas are shy and fast, very wary of approach. Fortunately, while working as a ranger in Kakadu I had a
lot more opportunity to encounter these lizards than most and was able to get a number of photographs. They are known locally
as "Bongga" in Kunwingku. This animal was photographed at Ubirr in Northern Kakadu. Unfortunately, with the arrival of the
introduced south American Cane toad (Bufo marinus) in Kakadu, these spectacular lizards might disappear.
