Congress Building, Montevideo, Uruguay, 2002

Fifty different types of beautiful Uruguayan marble can be found on the walls, pillars, and benches that line Uruguay's Congress Building. Instead of trying to show all of them, I move in and simplify my image by taking a closer vantage point. I want this picture to express the beauty of these decorative embellishments and the workmanship that went into them. I contrast four different kinds of marble with each other by leading the eye into the picture at lower left, then moving into the picture along the marble railing to the black diamond -- the focal point of this image. The diamond provides a strong contrast to the three different kinds of marble that flank it.

Thanks, Lisbeth, for noticing the incongruous role of the black diamond. It is almost "art deco" in design, which contrasts to the more traditional embellishments around it. It is the focal point, as well as the point of most contrast to the other marbles around it.

I like the presentation of marble given in this picture. The shape of the black diamond makes it present its surroundings - and the fact that it looks fresh and actually unusual "modern" in the given context makes me look at marble with new curiosity.

I posted this photo here, Henk, as an example of effective eye flow. And it's not often we see such a variety of marble in one small area. if I am able to express the beauty of these marbles and the quality of workmanship that went into them, I'll be happy. I don't see how post-processing would strengthen the integrity of this photograph -- it would only serve to diminish it.

I can understand that not many will react on this photo although it got a very strong graphical layout and very interesting samples of differant marbles. Perfect for a marble handicraft salesman but a litlle bit dull as it got only one aspect : stone and the lightening is rather homogeneous. With some postprocessing I am sure you can get this out of is loneliness.
