We had seen this fallen tree, located about a block from our house, earlier but stopped for a closer look when we saw neighbors working to clear some of the branches from the street to allow for parking. They live in the next house over on the left and actually saw the tree fall during the violent thunderstorm on Thursday night; luckily it missed their two cars, which were parked in the open space right next to the tree.
One of them told me that they had complained to the city about the tree being unhealthy and that an arborist had come to examine it a few years ago, declaring that it was fine, which it clearly wasn’t since it’s now obvious that the trunk was hollow. The branches, which smashed a lamppost during its fall, extend to the stairs of the church on the right of the picture.
