Unfortunately, things are a lot different in 2026 than in 2016 https://pbase.com/britestar/image/164173367
Because our next-door neighbor started to feed the wild deer some years back, deer have become habituated to the point of no longer being a treat to occasionally see https://pbase.com/britestar/image/171926410 They are now a major neighborhood problem. Destroying our new landscaping, they are fearless of people. Even with a 6' fence, our other neighbor has had to abandon his vegetable garden because of the deer. Still other neighbors have had deer and tick "professionals" out to try to help them protect their children and property. Unfortunately, thing have gone past the point of normal deer control. These deer poop, pee, eat everything, and drop ticks as they go.
Beyond the problems they are causing humans, their numbers now form a herd larger than the environment can handle. Over population leads to disease. When standing up, you can see the ribs and backbone protruding on the above fawn. This fawn is a walking skeleton. He also has had weepy eyes that may also indicate a health problem. His two siblings are also thin, but not quite as bad - yet. Could that lump on his back be the start of a tumor? Some adult deer in the herd now have large ones. Odds are high that this fawn will not survive the next season. It is a sad situation all around.
As for the weather, it has been close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit today. Climate change doesn't help things. This is the new normal.
