Floral Light Up

Higashiyama, Kyoto, Japan view map

When I originally started posting up to this gallery there were still regular Hanatouro events, so the aim was to give some highlights and hope people would visit to see the rest. Since these Hanatouro events are now ended, I’ve decided to release a few more photos from the back catalogue to this gallery, to document an event that ran for more than 10 years.

This photo was taken during the 2011 Higashiyama Hanatouro. On Kiyomizu-zaka (Matsubara-dori) out the front of Hotokuji (a small Buddhist temple) was where I captured this flower arrangement. There were always flower arrangements (Japanese “Ikebana”) a different points along the Hanatouro route.

15-Aug-2026 NOTE: I’ve been away from PBase for a few months as I went on a trip to Japan and then was busy creating the travel gallery of that trip on my other site, check those photos out here.

I especially like how the arrangement echoes the elegant lines of the temple wall behind it. The small spotlights add sparkle and depth while preserving the evening atmosphere of the Higashiyama Hanatouro. A lovely memory of Kyoto in 2011, and a fine capture of one of those artistic surprises found along the festival route...V
