Today we decidied to run the USGS Breeding Bird Survey for the New York route we did last year. Coincidentally, we ran last year's on the same date. We still have to tabulate the birds heard and seen over the 50, 3-minute stops. The stops are about one half mile apart. Again this year, we encountered a pair of fox kits playing in the tall grass near the road. Thankfully, this particular road is not heavily traveled. We also rescued a poor young American Robin at one of the later stops that most likely was struck by or ran into a vehicle. It was sitting helplessly on the shoulder and we took it to the SPCA Wildlife Department. When I checked later in the day, they said it had no broken bones and was probably concussed. With some rest and treatment it will hopefully recover.
