The Pink Moon and Astronauts
April's moon name comes from the early spring bloom of a wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata, commonly known as creeping phlox or moss phlox. This flower, often called “moss pink,” was in full bloom around April’s Full Moon. Thanks to this seasonal connection, the April Full Moon became known as the Pink Moon! The moon may not be pink, but many of the Spring flowers here on Earth are.
Meanwhile, yesterday's NASA manned Artemis II launch https://pbase.com/britestar/image/176210405 entered its first full day of their trip to the dark side of the moon. On April 2, all systems remained functional, and a translunar injection burn took place. This roughly six-minute firing will send the spacecraft on its trajectory to carry the crew around the moon, It will also harness lunar gravity to "slingshot" them back to Earth, NASA said. This translunar injection burn will send astronauts out of Earth orbit and toward the Moon for the first time since 1972.
So, looking up at the sky tonight brought different thoughts to my mind. The United States' hope is to eventually have people colonizing on the moon. That's the future. Meanwhile, I'm still with my ancestors in just admiring the comforting beauty and glow of our natural satellite from earth. To me, there is no place like home, and the earth is my home. But I can also marvel about a future to come for generations after me.
