Do I Have Enough Pairs of Running Shoes?

Boulder

No. And this doesn't even include trail shoes or track spikes! To be fair, one of those pairs used to be running shoes, but I transitioned them to walking shoes after 400 miles of running in them. And of the others, there are only three pairs that I wear regularly, for different kinds of training runs (longs runs, shorter easy runs, speed workouts). But I do wear the others on occasion. One pair specifically for shorter races (5K or below), and one pair for longer races (10K and above).

I have running shoes for walking that have soles flared so wide that they make driving a three-pedal car difficult.

I've never paid $300 for a pair of shoes. Most of these pairs retail for $120-$190 a pair, but my running group gets a discount at our local running store, and I sometimes buy a pair of last year's model online when it's about half the release price. Four of these pairs incorporate special plates for bouncyness. Two of them have carbon plates (the higher-end racing shoes), and two of them have nylon plates that are almost as good. Nike tends to be the most expensive brand, but I never buy Nike, mostly because of their questionable sponsorship decisions. They gave a deal to Michael Vick after he got out of prison for abusing dogs, even though he refused to say in an interview that he would have done anything different, if given the chance to go back in time. They also pulled their sponsorship from Meb Keflezighi, the US marathoner who had won an Olympic silver medal (in Athens), because they thought he was too old. He then went and won the Boston Marathon the year after the bombing.

Ironically about a week ago I was reading a article on running shoes and they were claiming that the old school thinking of 300 to 400 mile life for high end shoes might be outdated given the advancements in modern foams. In the end they stated the old gold standard that your body and feet will tell you when it’s time to retire your shoes and swipe your Visa Card for another $300.00 pair of shoes.

Carbon fiber in running shoes… who knew. Paul

Yikes. A great shot which surprises me in the number of shoes. Color coded I am sure.

Actually, I always use elastic laces. Whenever I buy a new pair of shoes, I buy a pair of elastic laces to put on them. Many years ago, when I had only been running for a couple of years, I was trying to break 22 minutes in a 5K. Halfway through the race, my laces came untied, even though I had double knotted them. It took me 10 seconds to tie them, but I missed my goal by 6 seconds! Never again, I thought. These laces can be tightened for when you're running, and then easily loosened when you want to take the shoes off. I have never had a pair come off by accident. I love them.

I am a little surprised that some of these have rubber laces....I would want to keep my running shoes on! I am not a runner....(though in high school I did run on the Cross Country Team...not so much now). Traveller
