Red-throated Loon

Lake Frederick, Virginia

Drove out Grebe Drive and parked; hiked to Grebe Point for a good look at the open water.
Headed NW along the Primiotive Trail towards Crooked Run.
This loon was making awful cries; over-and-over. Thought he/she might be injured, but after about 8 minutes, the calls quit and she appeared to be just resting on the ice. As I moved away from him/her, the vocals completely stopped. Maybe I frightened him/her.
ID changed from 'Common' to 'Red-throated Loon' per Merlin Bird ID.

Hopefully there's some open water it can get to.

They do need water to take off. This one was in distress. Is there a local wildlife rehabilitator you can call?

Wow, a loon on ice. I hope it was OK and could fly off. Don't they need water for a take off?
