Marasmius calhouniae

Salt Point State Park, California

Calhoun's Pinwheel
This small grayish white Marasmius features caps that are usually under an inch across, with a somewhat sunken disc. Caps are smooth and radially furrowed, dry to moist and translucent striate when wet. The gills are decurrent and distant, colored like the caps, and often intervenose. The stipes are up to 4cm tall and 2-5mm across, hollow, cylindrical or slightly tapering downward with concolorous or becoming grayish towards the base. The flesh is white, very thin, unchanging when cut. There is no odor and the taste is mild or of radish. It is found under conifer, especially pine and can be quite abundant in winter and after rain.
