Hygrocybe aurantiosplendens

Richardson Grove State Park, Garberville, California

Orange Waxcap
Against the dark forest floor of a redwood forest the caps are quite eye-catching. Caps of this waxcap are orange to orange red, becoming marbled with yellow. They are 1-2.5 inches across, smooth, greasy, and translucent at the margins when wet. The gills are subdistant, waxy, yellow and notched. They drop a white spore print. The flesh is thin and yellowish to orangish. The stipes are smooth, yellow, equal or tapering somewhat, and whitish at the base. They are from 2-3.5 inches tall and up to 0.4 inches across. There is no odor and the taste is mild. Though not poisonous they are, like most waxcaps, poor candidates for tablefare.
