This is a Whitebark Pine Tree. They grow throughout western North America. Unfortunately, with global warming, Pine Beetles have been killing many of them. Scientists discovered that when a tree is basically “full” of beetles a pheromone is released telling other beetles that the tree is full and therefore those beetles look for another tree. Scientists were then able to create packets that contain a get which gives off that same pheromone, thus fooling the beetles and protecting the tree!
