There is only 1 tiger species in the world, but it has a number of subspecies.
The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) lists 5 subspecies of tigers still existing, viz - Bengal Tiger; Siberian Tiger; Indochinese Tiger; Malayan Tiger; Sumatran Tiger.
3 other tiger subspecies are now extinct – the Caspian Tiger, the Bali Tiger and the Javan Tiger, while a fourth (the South China Tiger) is believed to be functionally extinct (meaning there may still be a few tigers living but their numbers will never recover).
The Malayan Tiger subspecies is classified as Critically Endangered. As it name suggests, Malayan Tigers are found only in Peninsula Malaysia (including southern Thailand), and fewer than 300 of them are still surviving in the wild today.
The photo shows a Malayan Tiger at the Singapore zoo, it looks quite docile when not baring its fangs ...
