This was a famous Roman gate, one of many built throughout the empire. The most famous one now is probably the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The thickness of this structure is likely why it survived the first and second world war. Across the street from this thing, my German skills saved me from suffering. As mentioned in the other picture, I was pretty sick at this point. Alex had to run around town to get us a hostel, and I was basically just resting on park benches while I waited. So across the street was a Pharmacy, and nobody there spoke English. Had I spoken no german, I would likely have not gotten the medicine I needed. The breakthrough phrase I learned while talking to the pharmacist lady? "Die Nase lauft" (runny nose)
