A few days (and a trip to Switzerland in the middle) after getting a free day on the train in Italy, we decided to spend a day going to Trier, a small city on the border between Germany and Luxembourg. We liked the idea of going there because this town is one of the oldest in Europe. It served as the western capitol of the Roman empire a very long time ago. There was an incredible array of old buildings and protective walls here.
