For the past fortnight or so I have been filling the coffers of the medical profession. I won't bore you with details, but it all started out with intestinal pain. Got some pills for that but then my lower right leg got swollen and sore. The vascular surgeon said go straight to the Emergency Room which I did. So after half a day of three types of scans, they figured out what all was wrong. The abdominal pain turned out to be something other than diverticulitis, an experience I have enjoyed a couple times in the past. So after a lower leg vascular ultrasound, a CT scan of the lungs and a transthoracic echocardiogram the doctors determined that I had Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT, blood clot in leg vein) and a pulmonary thrombosis (blood clot in lung). Bottom line is that I will survive but I have to be careful and take an anticoagulant, Eliquis. Also wear a compression stocking on my right leg.
I have been at home for a while and feeling just fine. There is no mobility impairment. The body has a mechanism for removing blood clots, it just takes a while. The anticoagulant keeps more from forming. So a few follow-ups with the doctors after Thanksgiving and wait several months before another CT scan and vascular ultrasound. I only spent two nights in the hospital.
