Today it was experimenting with panoramas. Both the Powershot SX70 and Powershot G5X Mk2 have a panorama setting. Might as well try them out and see what happens. My iPhone12 was the control. I have used it for panoramas quite a bit and it has done an acceptable job.

Turns out that both the SX70 and G5 Mk2 are not well behaved. They are very sensitive to minor changes in vertical aiming (elevation) which is hard to control when shooting hand held. The top photo is with the G5X Mk2 hand held. You can plainly see shifts as the camera compensates for changes in elevation. The same was true with the SX 70. The bottom photo is what I got with the iPhone. No problems. One other thing is that at least with the G5X Mk2 there were obvious changes in exposure across the panorama when I tried it inside the office. Not good. I have never observed that with the iPhone. As a final experiment I mounted the G5X Mk2 on a tripod and tried the panorama by fixing the elevation and just panning. It worked out OK. I expected that.

Bottom line, the panorama setting on the SX70 and G5X Mk2 is flaky if you are shooting hand held. You can mount is on a tripod and have a good chance of getting a decent image. I think I would shoot a bunch of panels with either camera and use the manual exposure setting to prevent changes in exposure. Lightroom and Photoshop have very good photo stitching processes to put the panels together into a panorama.

As for me, I will use my iPhone. Simple and effective. I learned a lot today. Such fun.
